A Hardware and Secure Pseudorandom Generator for Constrained Devices

2018

Hardware security for an Internet of Things or cyber physical system drives the need for ubiquitous cryptography to different sensing infrastructures in these fields. In particular, generating strong cryptographic keys on such resource-constrained device depends on a lightweight and cryptographically secure random number generator. In this research work, we have introduced a new hardware chaos-based pseudorandom number generator, which is mainly based on the deletion of an Hamilton cycle within the $N$ -cube (or on the vectorial negation), plus one single permutation. We have rigorously proven the chaotic behavior and cryptographically secure property of the whole proposal: the mid-term eff…

Cascaded H-Bridges Multielvel Inverters: grid connected advanced applications

Power electronics is going to increase in the modern electrical systems. It is well known that the use of power electronics allows the management and the control of the energy flow, obtaining voltage and current waveforms suitable for electrical loads. In this scenario, multilevel power converters are finding increased attention in industry and academia as one of the promising choices of electronic conversion thanks to their features and many different application fields with high power and medium voltage. Moreover, they are fundamental in interfacing electric grid to high power renewable energy systems (i.e. PV, Wind farm, Biomass, Fuel Cell etc.). Nowadays, the research is focused on the …

A Selective Change Driven System for High-Speed Motion Analysis.

2016

Vision-based sensing algorithms are computationally-demanding tasks due to the large amount of data acquired and processed. Visual sensors deliver much information, even if data are redundant, and do not give any additional information. A Selective Change Driven (SCD) sensing system is based on a sensor that delivers, ordered by the magnitude of its change, only those pixels that have changed most since the last read-out. This allows the information stream to be adjusted to the computation capabilities. Following this strategy, a new SCD processing architecture for high-speed motion analysis, based on processing pixels instead of full frames, has been developed and implemented into a Field …

An Embedded Fingerprints Classification System based on Weightless Neural Networks

2009

Automatic fingerprint classification provides an important indexing scheme to facilitate efficient matching in large-scale fingerprint databases in Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFISs). The paper presents a new fast fingerprint classification module implementing on embedded Weightless Neural Network (RAM-based neural network). The proposed WNN architecture uses directional maps to classify fingerprint images in the five NIST classes (Left Loop, Right Loop, Whorl, Arch and Tented Arch) without anyone enhancement phase. Starting from the directional map, the WNN architecture computes the fingerprint classification rate. The proposed architecture is implemented on Celoxica RC20…

A portable instrument for the location and identification of defects generating PD

2011

A portable instrument based on an antenna probe and suitable for partial discharge detection, have been characterized through both laboratory and on-site experiments carried out on coils and stator windings of ac rotating machines. The antenna probe allows the capture of electromagnetic waves in a bandwidth of 0.1–100 MHz. Pulse signals and ac supply voltage reference are obtained by means of high-pass and low-pass filters, respectively, so avoiding the need of a direct connection with the objects under test. By this way, real-time phase resolved partial discharge patterns can be derived. Results of a comparison of the diagnostic information provided by PD patterns due to conducted and irra…

FPGA implementation of a fuel cell emulator

2010

Fuel cell based systems are usually tested with the aid of high-cost and complex auxiliary devices. A fuel cell emulator is an attractive solution for preliminary downward system test. The emulator replaces the effective power source saving cost, volume and hydrogen reserve still ensuring high-accuracy of test results. The use of a highperformance fuel cell model is essential for a successful conclusion of the overall design process. Although the proposed emulator is suitable for each fuel cell type and power level, a 10W Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell emulator is designed and tested. An FPGA based controller models the fuel cell steady-state and dynamic behaviour, including temperature…

An Embedded Biometric Sensor for Ubiquitous Authentication

2013

Communication networks and distributed technologies move people towards the era of ubiquitous computing. An ubiquitous environment needs many authentication sensors for users recognition, in order to provide a secure infrastructure for both user access to resources and services and information management. Today the security requirements must ensure secure and trusted user information to protect sensitive data resource access and they could be used for user traceability inside the platform. Conventional authentication systems, based on username and password, are in crisis since they are not able to guarantee a suitable security level for several applications. Biometric authentication systems…

A new control system prototype for the energy production maximization of a unequally irradiated PV system

2011

This paper deals with the mismatch effect due to a unequally irradiation on a PV (PhotoVoltaic) system. The mismatch effect due to the partial shading of a PV module can be limited thanks to the installation of both bypass and block diodes. Unfortunately, this solution cannot fully solve the disvantages related to the mismatch effect. The Authors, in previous papers [1, 2], have theoretically demonstrated that the mismatch effect can be solved by changing the parallel/series connections of the modules of a PV system, taking into account each module radiating condition. This paper represents a first step of the experimental development of the above mentioned theoretical result. Specifically,…

An Embedded Module for Iris Micro-Characteristics Extraction

2009

In this paper a new approach, based on iris micro-characteristics, has been used to make possible an embedded biometric extractor. This recognition approach is based on ophthalmologic studies that have proven the existence of different micro-characteristics as well as fingerprint minutiae. These micro-characteristics are permanent and immutable and they can be used to create strong and robust identification systems.Biometric recognition systems are critical components of our everyday lives. Since such electronic products evolve to software intensive systems, where software, becoming larger, more complex and prevalent, introduces many problems in the development phases. The development of em…
